Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira'

Lion's head maple

Unusual, slow-growing Japanese maple.  Clumped leaves bound tightly to the stems grow in tufts, giving the tree the appearance of a bonsai.  Foliage turns flame-red in the fall.  Grows to a height of 10-12 feet over many years.

This specimen is 3-4' tall, photographed shortly after planting in May, 2000.
